Breakdown of the Damage Step
At that place are five distinct timings within the Impairment Stride.
- Beginning of the Damage Step (Japanese: ダメージステップ
開 始 時 Damēji Suteppu Kaishiji) - Earlier damage calculation (Japanese: ダメージ
計 算 前 Damēji Keisanmae) - Damage calculation (Japanese: ダメージ
計 算 時 Damēji Keisanji) - Subsequently impairment calculation (Japanese: ダメージ
計 算 後 Damēji Keisango) - End of the Damage Step (Japanese: ダメージステップ
終 了 時 Damēji Suteppu Shūryōji)
Start of the Damage Step
The plough histrion declares they are entering the Damage Step.[1]
- Effects that apply "during the Damage Footstep (simply)", such as "Steamroid" or "Double or Nothing!", begin applying immediately.
- A face-downward monster existence attacked is NOT flipped at this time.[one]
- If that monster is destroyed by a card consequence, since it was never flipped face-upwardly, its effects that activate when flipped face-up (such as Flip effects) practice not activate.[two]
- Cards and effects that activate "at the start of the Damage Step", such as "Neo-Spacian Grand Mole" or "Follow Wing", can exist activated.[i]
- For cards without Trouble-Solving Card Text (PSCT), the text "without (applying) damage adding" indicates that the effect activates either here, or before harm adding.
- Some effects indicate the start of the Impairment Step by specifying a contesting monster's position (face up-up or face-down), or by stating that a face up-downward monster is not flipped face-up notwithstanding, such equally "Nanobreaker" or "Ally of Justice Reverse Break".
- Cards without PSCT that activate at this timing, only have no way to distinguish that they do non activate before damage calculation, are "Disciple of the Forbidden Spell"[3] [4], "Core Blaster"[5], and "Blackwing - Jin the Rain Shadow".[6] [seven]
- Fast effects that alter ATK/DEF can be activated.[8] [ix] [10]
Before damage calculation
At this signal, if a face-downward monster is being attacked, flip it face-upwardly.[1]
- If the attacked monster has an effect that activates when it is flipped face-up (such as a Flip effect), that effect does Non activate at this time.[8] [11] It will activate after harm adding, even if the flipped monster leaves the Monster Zone before and so.[12] [13] [14]
- Regardless of whether or not the attacked monster was initially face up-down, if the monster is Gear up at this betoken or subsequently in the Harm Step (up until damage calculation is completed), such every bit past "Gemini Counter", it volition immediately exist flipped face up-upward.[15]
- If a monster is flipped confront-up and it has a Continuous Result, such as "Star Boy" or "Jinzo", generally that effect is immediately applied.[16] [17]
- Continuous Furnishings that prevent the flipped monster from being targeted for attacks, such every bit "Control Knight", or from being attacked, such every bit "Machina Sniper" or "Large-Tusked Mammoth", practice NOT stop the current attack from continuing.[18] [xix] [20]
- If the flipped monster has a Continuous Upshot that destroys itself, such as "Behemothic Kozaky" or "Zombie Mammoth", the monster is not destroyed at this fourth dimension.[21] [22]
- The aforementioned thing applies if the flipped monster conflicts with a "You can merely command 1 ???" or "There tin only be 1 ??? on the field" upshot, or if "Rivalry of Warlords" or "Gozen Match" is active and the flipped monster has the wrong Type/Attribute.
- In all these cases, the advisable activity is adamant and washed after impairment adding.[23] [24]
- Cards and effects that activate "before damage calculation", such as "Drillroid" or "Performapal Barracuda", can exist activated.[ane]
- For cards without PSCT, the text "without (applying) damage calculation" indicates that the effect activates either here, or at the start of the Damage Step.
- All cards that have effects that actuate before damage calculation have since been reprinted with PSCT, except "Disc Fighter".[25] [26]
- For cards without PSCT, the text "without (applying) damage calculation" indicates that the effect activates either here, or at the start of the Damage Step.
- Fast effects that modify ATK/DEF can be activated.[8] [nine] [10]
- After both players have agreed that they have finished activating cards and effects in this office of the Impairment Footstep, impairment adding is entered.
- If a monster was attacked and left the Monster Zone by a card event during this Damage Step (up to this indicate), impairment adding is non conducted,[ii] [17] simply the remainder of the Damage Pace proceeds normally (allowing for advisable Trigger Effects to activate normally, such as Flip monsters, "Nightmare Penguin", "Amazoness Sage", etc.).[12] [13] [27]
Perform damage calculation
Boxing damage is calculated and inflicted. If 2 monsters are involved in the boxing, it is adamant which monster(s) are destroyed by battle (if any).[i] [x]
- Effects that utilise "during damage calculation (merely)", such as "Night Artist" or "Skyscraper", are applied immediately.
- Cards and effects that activate "during damage calculation", such as "Kuriboh" or "Forbidden Scripture", can be activated.[1]
- If a monster is destroyed by battle, it is Non sent to the Graveyard however.[1] [10]
- If an effect prevents a monster from existence destroyed past this battle past doing something else "instead" (such as "Vicious Claw" returning itself to the paw), it is decided whether to apply or non at this point.
- The "instead" action volition be washed at the stop of the Impairment Step.[28]
- In general, cards and effects that modify ATK/DEF cannot be activated at this point or for the rest of this Damage Stride.[8] [10] [29]
Later on impairment calculation
- Monsters that were destroyed past battle are still non sent to the Graveyard yet.[one] [ten]
- If a monster that was flipped face up-up during the Damage Pace has a Continuous Result that destroys itself (such equally "Behemothic Kozaky" or "Zombie Mammoth"), that effect volition apply immediately if still appropriate, unless the monster was destroyed by battle.[21] [22]
- If its name conflicts with a "You tin only control 1 […]," or "At that place tin only exist 1 […] on the field," consequence, the flipped monster volition immediately be destroyed, unless it was destroyed by boxing.[23] [30]
- If "Rivalry of Warlords"/"Gozen Friction match" is agile, and the flipped monster has the wrong Attribute/Type, it will be immediately sent to the Graveyard.[24]
- Cards and furnishings that activate "after damage calculation", such as "Wall of Illusion" or "Madolche Flit", tin be activated.
- Effects that activate when a player takes battle damage, such equally "Don Zaloog" or "Damage Condenser", are activated at this fourth dimension.[1].
- Effects that actuate when flipped face-up, such as Flip effects, are activated at this time.[1] [xi].
Monsters that were destroyed by boxing
The following rules apply to monsters that were be destroyed by boxing, but have not been sent to the Graveyard yet (or some other appropriate location):
- They are treated every bit "destroyed by battle" for Continuous/Continuous-like Effects that apply to those monsters, such as "Dark Ruler Ha Des",[31] and for effects that activate later on damage calculation when a monster is destroyed by battle, such as "Performapal Fire Mufflerlion".
- Their Continuous Effects are no longer applied.[x] [32]
- They cannot activate their optional Quick Effects, nor be used as a cost to activate an optional card or effect.[33] [34]
- This does not apply to mandatory effects, such equally "Doomcaliber Knight".[35]
- They cannot be targeted past cards or furnishings, have their battle positions inverse, or accept their ATK/DEF inverse,[8] [10] [36] [37] [38]
- They still tin have their effect(due south) negated.[39]
- They cannot be returned to the hand by bill of fare furnishings,[40] [41] [42] unless they are existence returned instead of beingness sent to the Graveyard, such every bit with "Terminal Infinitesimal Cancel".
- They can still be destroyed, sent to the Graveyard, or banished before being sent to the Graveyard as a upshot of battle.[43] [44]
- If a monster leaves the field before beingness destroyed by battle, cards and furnishings that actuate when that monster is destroyed by battle practise not activate.[24] [45]
End of the Damage Step
Monsters that were destroyed past battle are now sent to the Graveyard (or another advisable location).[1]
- If an effect prevented a monster from being destroyed past battle by doing something else "instead", and the action is determined to exist washed earlier, it is done at this time.[46] [47]
- Cards and furnishings that actuate "at the stop of the Damage Step", such as "Amazoness Sage" or "Enlightenment", can be activated.
- Nearly effects that activate when a monster is destroyed by boxing, such as "Grenosaurus" or "Hero Point", are also activated at this fourth dimension.[1] [xi]
- Once there are no effects left to activate or resolve, the Damage Step ends, and the Battle Stride is re-entered.[1]
- Effects that land "until the cease of the Damage Step" or "during the Damage Step (only)" now elapse and stop applying.[1] [48]
Cards and effects that can be activated
But following cards and effects tin can be activated during the Harm Step (unless the card states otherwise):
- Mandatory effects[10]
- Counter Trap Cards[8] [10]
- Monster and Trap furnishings that negate the activation of a card or result.[ix] [49] [l] [51] [52]
- Continuous Trap Cards with an optional effect that negates the activation of cards or furnishings, such as "Altergeist Protocol", tin exist activated, but the effect must also be activated in the same Chain Link.[53]
- Fast effects that directly modify the ATK/DEF—increasing, decreasing, changing to a specific amount, etc.—of a monster(s) on the field (not necessarily the ones currently contesting),[54] until before harm adding. More often than not, during damage calculation and afterwards, they can no longer be activated.[8] [ix] [ten] [55] [56] [57]
- This excludes cards that indirectly modify ATK/DEF, such as "Reverse Trap" or "Skill Drain";[58] [59] cards that might not alter ATK/DEF at resolution, such every bit "Half or Nothing";[threescore] cards that Special Summon a monster and exclusively modify the Summoned monster's ATK/DEF, such as "Powerful Rebirth" or "Reverse of Neos";[61] and "Curse of Anubis", since its DEF-altering effect is applied separately from its issue that changes battle positions.[62] [Notes one]
- Continuous Trap Cards with an optional Quick-like Effect that alters ATK/DEF, such as "Attack of the Cornered Rat", tin can be activated, only the outcome must also exist activated in the same Concatenation Link.[63] [Notes 2]
- Trap Cards with a Continuous-similar Effect that alters ATK/DEF, such as "Fire Formation - Kaiyo", tin can be activated.[64] This includes Normal Trap Cards that equip themselves and alter the equipped monster's ATK/DEF, such every bit "Horn of the Phantom Beast".[65] This excludes Trap Cards whose Continuous-like Upshot modifies ATK/DEF at a time other than the Trap's resolution, such as "Swift Samurai Tempest!".[66]
- Even if the effect would not affect a monster at resolution, these Traps tin can withal be activated as long as the potential is there. For example, activating "Dark Contract with the Witch" during your own turn or while you command no Fiend monsters, "Unpossessed" when a monster other than a "Familiar-Possessed" monster is attacking, or "Chosen of Zefra" while there are fewer than 3 "Zefra" monsters face up-up in your Extra Deck.
- If these Trap Cards have a Quick-like Effect, such as "Night Contract with the Witch", that effect cannot exist activated in the same Concatenation Link equally the Trap Card, unless information technology tin can also be activated during the Damage Step.[67]
- Unique exceptions are "Evil Nail",[68] [69] "Scrap Sheen" (TCG merely),[70] [71] "Zero Force",[72] [73] and the Quick-like Issue of "Rocket Hand",[74] which take rulings stating that they cannot be activated during the Damage Step.
- Trigger and Trigger-like Effects—if that effect activates in response to the card itself being moved to a different location,[10] [eleven] [75] [76] [77] [78] being flipped face-upward (including Flip furnishings),[ane] [x] [eleven] or having its battle position changed[79]—unless the effect Fusion Summons.[eighty]
- In general, other optional Trigger and Trigger-like Furnishings that accept activation atmospheric condition that tin be met both during and outside the Damage Pace cannot exist activated. For cards that have PSCT, these ordinarily state "(except during the Impairment Footstep)" in their activation conditions. Otherwise, these effects are associated with activation atmospheric condition that involve actions regarding other cards, such as "When/If ... is destroyed", "When/If ... is added from ... to your hand", "When/If ... is Special Summoned", etc. of cards like "Revival Rose", "Ambulanceroid", and "Cyber Dinosaur".[81] This includes Trigger Effects that activate in response to actions involving itself and/or other cards (but non just itself or other cards), such as "Madolche Chickolates".
- Cards that lack PSCT with these activation conditions, but have rulings stating they tin can be activated during the Harm Footstep, include "Verdant Sanctuary".[82] [83]
- OCG/TCG ruling differences:
- In the TCG, the effects of "Shark Stickers", "Statue of Anguish Blueprint" (Trigger-like Result), "Superheavy Samurai Kabuto", "U.A. Blockbacker", "Vampire Grace", and "Current of air-Up Shark" (all of which have PSCT) that can activate when another monster is Summoned do non country "(except during the Damage Step)", and then those furnishings tin can be activated during the Harm Step. In the OCG, none of their furnishings can be activated.[84] [85] [86] [87] [88] [89]
- In the TCG, the effect of "Attack the Moon!" (which has PSCT) does non state "(except during the Damage Step)", and so that upshot can be activated. In the OCG, it cannot.[xc]
- Cards and furnishings that activate in response to an event that is inherent to the Damage Step (e.g. the five unique timings of the Damage Step, battle damage is inflicted, a monster is destroyed by battle, etc.).
- Continuous Trap Cards with an optional result that specifies an issue in the Harm Stride, such every bit "Yang Zing Creation" or "Damage = Reptile", tin be activated, but the effect must also be activated in the same Concatenation Link.[91] This does not utilise if the result is mandatory.[92] [93] [94] [95] [Notes 4]
- Cards that cannot exist labeled every bit any of the in a higher place cards, only accept rulings stating that they and/or their consequence(south) are immune to be activated during the Impairment Step.
- In both the TCG and OCG: "Desrook Archfiend"[96] [97]
- In the TCG only: "Muko",[98] "Skull Meister",[99] "Spell Reactor・RE",[100] "Tethys, Goddess of Lite",[101] "Trap Reactor・Y FI",[102] and "T.1000. Bract Blaster"[103]
A card or effect merely needs to meet one of the above requirements to be able to activate during the Impairment Step, fifty-fifty if information technology fails all the others.
Notes
- ↑ This is supported by comparison with the texts of cards such every bit "Supay", which has two independent actions (doubling ATK and returning to the hand) dependent on one action (Special Summoning a monster) coalesced into a unmarried judgement format, which differs from the 2-sentence format of "Curse of Anubis". If "Curse of Anubis" was formatted in a unmarried sentence, it would look similar to the Ignition Effect of "Dragon Knight Draco-Equiste".
- ↑ The ruling "You tin activate "Assail of the Cornered Rat" (and/or its issue) during damage calculation, or at any point in the Harm Pace prior to damage calculation." is partially wrong. With the release of Konami's "Damage Step Rules" article, in conjunction with page 33 in Yu-Gi-Oh! Trading Card Game - Official Rulebook Version nine.1 (which also refers to the "Impairment Step Rules" article), neither "Attack of the Cornered Rat" nor its upshot can be activated during damage calculation.
- ↑ This statement is an extrapolation, every bit in that location is no source anywhere that explicitly confirms this; there is simply a consistent design of rulings for such Continuous Trap Cards stating that the cards themselves cannot be activated during the Damage Footstep.
